Snow conditions get betterPosted Sun, 17 Jan 2016 14:15:16
Snow conditions across the Alps have improved a lot during the last week with cold weather allowing snow to fall down to much lower levels. How’s the week ahead shaping up?
During the first couple of days there could be further snow, this is mostly likely in the northern and western Alps. The forecast chart below is for 00GMT, Tuesday 19th January.
During the middle and second half of the week drier conditions are probable and freezing levels stay quite low. The new snow and cold air could provide great conditions for skiing!
More snow but milder?
By the weekend there are signs of a change in the weather pattern across western Europe. Milder air looks is forecast to return from the south west and initially this has the potential to bring more snow. The forecast chart below is for 00GMT, Sunday 24th January. Remember that at this range the details will change significantly and the chart is only being used to give a general view.
By Sunday much milder air encroaches from the west. The chart below is for 15GMT, Sunday 24th January and shows the forecast freezing levels. Note the much higher freezing levels in the western Alps (and Pyrenees) and the colder air still hanging on across eastern Switzerland and Austria. It’s too early to be sure but freezing levels could be heading back up above 2500m in the west.
The next few days could remain cold more snow is possible. A drier period develops during the middle of the week but through the weekend more snow could be followed by much milder weather.
